What Are Retractable Belt Barrier Stanchions?
Stanchions are those handy little crowd control devices we count on every day for organized foot traffic, even when we’re not conscious of it. Whether you're catching a flight or picking up groceries, you’ve seen these simple posts with their rope or belt barriers in grocery stores, airports, shopping malls, museums, and schools. Almost anywhere there may be crowds, you’ll find a stanchion guiding the way.
Retractable belt barrier stanchions are simply these stanchions which have built in retractable belts rather than hanging ropes. At the top of the stanchion post there is a built in cassette which houses a belt inside, and typically belt receivers as well (so that other belts can be clipped into place.)
The belt, designed a bit like a seat belt in your car, can extend and retract as needed. This kind of stanchion is especially common in retail line formation, as its belt conveniently stretches or retracts to accommodate custom lengths and line barriers, and clips into place along the top of the neighboring stanchion post.
Installation varies, but most retractable belt barrier stanchions are free-standing, much like a standard classic post and rope stanchion. This means they can easily be moved around when line formation needs change.
Different Types of Retractable Belt Barriers
Just like any other crowd control device, there are different types of retractable belt barriers for different types of needs. Below we'll outline some of the more common retractable belt barrier types.
Keeping crowds organized is one kind of safety precaution, but our retractable belt barrier stanchion collection includes a number of stanchions especially optimized for safety. These safety belt barrier stanchions are designed with high-visibility colors which are common to safety industry such as orange, yellow, and red. They're also built with sturdy frames, durable bases, and long belt lengths. Stanchions like these may be especially helpful for workplace safety plans, OSHA requirements, and general hazard control.
There are many ways in which custom messaging on a retractable belt barrier's extendable belt may contribute to both safety and marketing. For example some people add way-finding messaging to their belts to contribute to smooth crowd management. This includes messaging like "Do Not Enter", and "This Line Closed". Or at airports, it's quite common for a specific airline to put their own branding on the stanchions in place at their ticketing counters to encourage recognizability when passengers need to find their proper check in lines.
But safety and way-finding are not the only uses for custom printing logos or messages onto a retractable belt barrier's belt. This can also be used for marketing purposes. A large sports event, conference, or concert for example may want to put a sponsor's logo on the belt.
Dual belt stanchions (or “twin retractable belt barriers”, as they're also called) have two belts - one which is at the normal position and height at the top of the post, and one which is approximately halfway down the post. The second stanchion belt helps provide a continuous barrier which is more thorough than a single belt and, being closer to the ground, helps meet ADA requirements for a barrier to be within 27 inches of the ground or less.
Outdoor stanchions are similar to safety stanchions, and are designed for weather-resistance and durability. This makes them suitable for even outdoor crowd control events like construction, parking lots, sporting events, and more. This includes a variety of base types which are better equipped for handling inclement weather, like heavy-duty rubber or cast-iron. They also often have long belt lengths of 65 feet or more, and high visibility colors since construction safety is a common use case for outdoor crowd control stanchions.
Choosing a Retractable Belt Barrier Stanchion
At Crowd Control Warehouse we have a robust collection of retractable belt barriers to accommodate a wide variety of crowd control needs. Business owners or safety managers in need of visual barriers in their large industrial environments may find the safety belt barriers with yellow, orange, or red post most useful. Small business or retail stores however may prefer the more lightweight and elegant stainless steel retractable belt barrier stanchions or stanchions with stanchion signs or belt messages for maintaining their retail store’s interior design while keeping organized checkout lines. Stanchions like these are available with multiple messaging like “Authorized Access Only”, “Cleaning In Progress”, “This Lane Closed”, and more. These retractable belt barriers with belt messages are a convenient way to keep customers or visitors out of construction or maintenance areas. Our most popular of these belt barrier stanchions is the retractable belt barrier with black post, also available with 25 different belt colors and messages.
Retractable Belt Barrier Stanchions for Crowd Control
When the general public makes their way through busy facilities, they likely have no idea how much intentionality and planning has gone into their “wayfinding” experience. So much in fact, that there are classes specifically about the accommodation of “wayfinding” in architecture and design. When planning a smooth wayfinding system in advance, designers may be strategic with the placement of walls and hallways, or change floor tile coloring to indicate waiting areas and walking areas without the use of walls. But much of this wayfinding-accommodation occurs after the permanent fixtures are already in place.
This is where retractable belt barriers for crowd control come into play. These affordable but effective stanchions are portable and impermanent, allowing for changing crowd control needs. 4-way cassette receivers at the top of the stanchion post allow for complex barrier structures. With just a simple belt barrier, a pathway is formed without the need for permanent structural changes.
Retractable Belt Barriers for Line Formation
If a smooth pedestrian experience is important for a customer’s wayfinding within your facility, it may be doubly important for their checkout experience. Surveys indicate that 3 in 4 shoppers don’t want to return to stores whose checkout lines felt too long. After 8 minutes of waiting, shoppers consider abandoning their purchase. Equally important however, is the way a person feels while they’re in line. If the experience feels chaotic, shoppers are likely to associate these feelings with the brand as a whole. For both of these reasons, organization is extremely important for keeping customers happy and winning a sale. Retractable belt barrier stanchions may be the most affordable and easiest way to streamline and organize this potentially chaotic customer experience.
